Top, Middle, Bottom: How The Marketing Funnel Works

Imagine a funnel — wide at the top, narrow at the bottom. That's the path a prospect takes to becoming a paying customer. There are three parts to a marketing funnel and each one has a different job.

TOF Top of Funnel : Awareness → getting noticed.

This is where people first find out you exist. A social post, a Google search, a friend mentioning your name. They don't know you yet, and most of them aren't ready to buy. That's fine — the only goal here is to be seen. Think of it as saying hello to a room full of people. Most walk past. A few stop.

MOF The middle: Consideration → building trust.

Now you have someone curious. They're reading your posts, checking your reviews, poking around your website. They're deciding whether you're the real deal. Your job here is to be helpful and consistent so they warm up to you. This part takes time, and it's the part where most strategies are abandoned.

BOF The bottom: Conversions → making the sale.

This is the "yes." They're ready, and now you make it easy — a clear price, a simple way to book, an obvious next step. If the top and middle did their job, this part is easy.

And keep in mind, you can't skip steps. You wouldn't propose marriage on a first hello. Most businesses that feel "stuck" are shouting at strangers at the top and wondering why nobody's buying — when the real gap is the middle, where trust gets built.

So look at your own funnel. Are people finding you but not sticking around? That's a top problem. Finding you, liking you, but not buying? That's a bottom problem.

Start by fixing where you are losing people in the funnel. Then narrow from there.
